Intake Gate Hoist Replacement

Idaho, USA
Summary

Matix provided engineering services for the replacement of a large intake gate hoist at a hydroelectric power generating plant. Due to frequency in earthquake activity, it was necessary to automate the gate to protect against an uncontrolled release and damaging the plant turbines. Our team provided services for the design of a new 125-ton electromechanically cable drum hoist, which included an open/close analysis of the intake gate, analysis of the existing structure, design and replacement of gate parts, design and coordination of the new hoist, selection of safety mechanisms and controls, a new enclosure over the equipment, and other ancillary components to ensure the gate was operational after an earthquake event.

Our scope included the design of new equipment and retrofit of existing structures, coordination with vendors, and final certification with Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to ensure construction was compliant with the design intent.
